Story: J. Borges was born in 1935, and is known as one of Brazil's living national treasures. As a master in the art of xylography, he depicts scenes of his native land of Pernambuco in his work. He began work early; at age 8, he was already farming with his father, and at age 10, he made and sold wooden spoons at the local market. With no money to illustrate his own booklets, he began to carve his own wood print blocks to create the images. And it was these images that ended up standing out. And so began his journey into the art world. Little by little, he began to receive commissions for his art, and he has since been held by many as the greatest xylography artist of the northeast. He has exhibited in a range of countries, and carried his culture across the world with him.
